Purpose:
The Transportation Router/Dispatcher ensures the efficient operation of the North Little Rock School District's transportation services by developing and maintaining computerized optimal routing solutions and schedules following established guidelines.
Nature & Scope:
The Transportation Router/Dispatcher performs safe and efficient school bus route planning and scheduling for regular and/or special education student transportation to and from school and school events. Will assist the Director of Transportation on various tasks such as student counts, annual reporting, and other duties within the Transportation office.
Essential Job Functions:
- Use routing software to develop and maintain a computerized database of school bus routing and scheduling information to ensure that all buses are routed in the safest and most efficient manner and that drivers are operating routes as written.
- Keep routes updated and maintain a student database to generate schedules, stops, runs, and route routes information.
- Review and revise regular and special education student bus routes and schedules.
- Use routing software to develop or update routes in the event of a weather hazard or other emergency.
- Complete transportation requests in accordance with the Transportation Department’s guidelines.
- Act as a liaison between the schools to provide support as needed concerning routes, student assignments, and changes.
- Communicate with bus drivers, mechanics, and dispatchers about routes.
- Send, read, and respond to emails appropriately.
- Use electronic notification systems to issue alerts about transportation issues or changes.
Other Job Functions:
- Assist, when required, as a substitute driver on route(s) or trips.
- Assist with student counts on each route.
- Assist the Director with necessary reports.
- Assist other transportation support staff as needed.
- Assist in answering the telephones and providing follow-up to questions and concerns.
- Acknowledge and follow the District and the Department’s confidentiality protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Minimum of 3 years routing experience or other related experience.
- Knowledge of Transfinder software applications or similar routing software.
- Possess the ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.
- Ability to write reports and effectively present information when necessary.
- Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement; or be able to acquire one within 90 days of hire.
Other Requirements:
- Must pass a preliminary criminal background and child maltreatment check.
- Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to random drug testing.
- Must be able to pass and maintain a physical that meets the requirements of the Department of Education.
